Doris Included in Irish Selection But Joe McCarthy Left Out

Ireland rugby squad announcement news

Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has included captain Doris in his Ireland team for the fall Tests, however lock McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, with doubts lingering if he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in the US on November 1.

Lock McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the first British and Irish Lions Test against Australia in July.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash are also absent due to injury, while full-back Keenan had already been ruled out after having a hip operation after the Lions tour.

Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole new player in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped Munster duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

After facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, the team host Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said the coach, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to Australia.

In a mostly experienced squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will again compete for the starting fly-half position. The fly-half role is still available, as Prendergast and Crowley set to face off for the first time in Saturday's URC match at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the additional fly-half selected as the coach opting against selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international victories over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced group of midfield choices. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for Keenan at number 15.

Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and Portugal.

McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has started a couple of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and played in the second string's loss by England in the English city earlier this year.

McCarthy was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a international appearance.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, while veteran Northern province lock Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Conan, who started each of the Lions matches over the summer, is poised to deputise for the captain should the skipper does not regain fitness in time to face the All Blacks.

The national team will meet in Dublin on the start of the week before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
